Baturraden, September 2, 2024 — As part of the Project-based Learning (PjBL) agenda in the Accommodation & Hospitality course, students from the 2023 batch of the Mandarin Study Programme at Universitas Jenderal Soedirman conducted a visit to Villa “Umah Impen” located in Karangsalam Village, Baturraden. This visit aimed to develop students’ understanding of field practices and communication skills in Mandarin Chinese.
In this PjBL activity, students were divided into nine groups. Each group was tasked with exploring the facilities at Villa “Umah Impen” and then creating short video content in Mandarin Chinese that depicted various facilities available at the villa. These videos are expected to serve as a practical learning medium for students to sharpen their Mandarin Chinese language abilities, particularly in the context of the tourism and hospitality industry. Not only that, the activity was also accompanied by tourism practitioner Yuni Astuti, who is the owner of BPW Sahabat Wisata, as well as the course instructor, Bagus Reza. The presence of the practitioner and lecturer in this activity provided students with the opportunity to gain direct insights from professionals in their field, as well as more directed guidance in completing the PjBL assignment.
This field study is part of the Mandarin Programme’s effort to support the implementation of Key Performance Indicator (IKU) 2 and IKU 3, namely providing off-campus learning experiences for students and encouraging lecturers to actively engage in activities outside the campus. With this PjBL approach, students are expected to not only master theory but also have practical experience relevant to the workplace. The visit to Villa “Umah Impen” provided valuable experience for students, strengthening their Mandarin Chinese communication skills while providing a realistic picture of the hotel and tourism industry in Indonesia.
