[fib.unsoed.ac.id/, Monday, 11 July 2022] The D3 Bahasa Mandarin Study Programme held a Guest Lecturer Session on Wednesday, 6 July 2022 with the theme “Challenges in the Digital Era of Translation and Tourism”. This event invited two speakers from two different fields. The first speaker was a practitioner in the tourism field, namely HR Manager of Hotel Java Heritage, Bapak Dedy Wijaya Simatupang, A.Md. The second speaker was a practitioner in the translation field, namely Mandarin translation practitioner, Windi Baralita, B.Ed.
The event was opened by the Dean of Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Ibu Dra. Roch Widjatini, M.Si. In her remarks, she expressed warm welcome for this activity. She hoped that this event could broaden the knowledge and expertise of students in the fields of translation and tourism in the digital era. The event was attended by the Vice Deans I and II, as well as all lecturers and students of D3 Bahasa Mandarin.
In his presentation, the first speaker, Pak Dedy, shared considerable knowledge about the tourism field. With material on hospitality, he presented many tourism statistics with great potential for D3 Bahasa Mandarin students. Moreover, investors from China are increasing rapidly and continuing to grow in Indonesia. “Employment prospects in the tourism field are open for tourism students, such as travel agent, tourism manager, tourism consultant, tour guide, and hotel or restaurant manager,” said Dedy.
Next, the presentation from the second speaker, who has a background in S1 Bahasa Mandarin education, revealed that translation activities are dynamic in nature, especially in written translation activities. She also shared her experience when starting as a translator on various online novel media channels. “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Everything new that is learned must be practiced and tried to understand how to develop strategies to face it,” said Windi, who is also an alumnus of the D3 Bahasa Mandarin programme at Unsoed.
All participants were very enthusiastic in following this activity. This was evidenced by the many participants who asked questions about the material presented by both speakers. Questions ranged from tips on becoming a good translator to how to develop skills needed in the tourism field.
At the end of the event, speaker certificates were presented by the D3 Bahasa Mandarin Program Coordinator, Nunung Supriadi, B.Ed., M.Hum to both speakers. After that, all participants took a group photo.
