Purwokerto – A proud achievement was once again attained by a student from the Pendidikan Bahasa Jepang (PBJ) Study Programme, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. A PBJ student from the class of 2025, Zahra Ardya Miarti (J1F025036), successfully won 1st Place in the Japanese Speech Contest organized by the Vocational College of Universitas Gadjah Mada on Saturday, 9 May 2026.
The competition was part of a series of academic events titled Okaeri Academic Day, which was attended by various students from several universities, such as Universitas Gadjah Mada, Universitas Airlangga, Universitas Brawijaya, and Universitas Ngudi Waluyo. In this event, the PBJ Study Programme of Unsoed sent two student delegates to participate in the Japanese speech category.
In the competition, Zahra delivered a speech themed “Gyaru Bunka”, highlighting the gyaru subculture in Japan and its connection to her personal experiences regarding beauty standards and self-acceptance. With a communicative, emotional, and reflective delivery, Zahra successfully captured the attention of the judges and secured the top spot in the competition.
Zahra expressed immense gratitude for this achievement. According to her, this victory served as a turning point after having previously experienced failure in a presentation contest the previous year.
“I am very thrilled to have won this event, as it is my first winning experience after previously facing failure in a presentation competition last year. This victory further motivates me to study even harder and achieve even greater accomplishments,” Zahra remarked.
The speech contest advisor of the PBJ Study Programme of Unsoed, Dian Bayu Firmansyah, expressed his appreciation for the achievement. According to him, Zahra displays outstanding competence in Japanese presentation and public speaking.
“Zahra-san indeed possesses strong potential in presentation or speech contests due to her sharp analytical skills and articulate delivery in Japanese. Hopefully, this inaugural achievement by a PBJ student will boost the confidence of other PBJ students to compete at even higher levels,” he explained.
This achievement is a proud milestone for the Pendidikan Bahasa Jepang Study Programme of Unsoed, while also demonstrating that PBJ students are capable of competing effectively at the national level. In addition to inspiring other students, Zahra’s victory is expected to foster the ongoing growth of an academic culture and positive competition within the PBJ Study Programme of Unsoed.
