Purwokerto, January 30, 2025 – Fakultas Ilmu Budaya of Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (FIB Unsoed) organized a community service activity in the form of Batik Ciprat training for inclusive students at SMP Permata Hati Purwokerto under the title Batikku Identitasku (My Batik My Identity). This activity aimed to introduce and train batik-making skills for students with special needs through methods that are easy and enjoyable.

This workshop featured a resource person from the Batik R Sokaraja Team, Berlinda Hera Eka Putri, a batik artisan from Banyumas and owner of Rumah Batik R. Students were invited to directly practice the entire batik-making process, starting from the ciprat process: sprinkling melted wax onto cloth using a brush, dyeing, and the final stage called nglorod to remove the wax from the cloth. During implementation, students with special needs were guided by mentors from FIB Unsoed students and lecturers. Student artworks were applied to tote bags and table runners, so they could be used directly or kept as souvenirs.
Students assist inclusive students in the batik-making process
The principal of SMP Permata Hati, Nur Aziz Asma Sangadah, S.Pd., explained that batik ciprat was chosen because its technique is more flexible and can be carried out easily, especially for children with special needs. “This method allows children to explore colors and patterns without rigid limitations, making it more suitable for inclusive students,” she said. The students expressed their joy after successfully making their first batik ciprat. They were very happy to learn batik-making and see the colors they had chosen themselves with great enthusiasm.

The Batik R Sokaraja Team also appreciated the participants’ enthusiasm in following every stage of the activity. “We are very happy to see their creativity, especially the students with special needs; there are many experiences that cannot be described from this activity,” said the team leader with emotion.
This activity is part of FIB Unsoed’s community service program, which is routinely conducted to share knowledge and skills with the community. Through this training, it is hoped that inclusive students at SMP Permata Hati will not only gain new experiences but will also become increasingly confident in developing their potential, as well as foster a love for batik as a symbol of national identity.
