Purwokerto, November 28, 2024 – Students of the D3 Mandarin Chinese Study Programme 2023 cohort at Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (UNSOED) conducted text translation practice at the Foreign Language Communication Division Laboratory, Fakultas Ilmu Budaya. This activity, taking place in the second week of January 2025, aims to sharpen students’ skills in translating Mandarin Chinese texts into Indonesian and vice versa, as part of a competency-based curriculum.
This practice is designed to provide students with direct experience in applying theories learned during lectures. Under the guidance of the course instructors, students work in small groups to translate various types of texts, ranging from literary texts, news articles, to official documents.
“This practice is very important for training language and cultural sensitivity, as well as enhancing students’ ability to understand context before translating a text,” said one of the instructors of the Translation course.
The Foreign Language Communication Division Laboratory at FIB UNSOED is equipped with modern facilities, such as computers with the latest translation software, digital reference materials, and access to online dictionaries. These facilities enable students to obtain optimal learning experiences.
This translation practice activity is expected to prepare students to face challenges in the workplace, particularly in the field of translation and interpretation. The D3 Mandarin Chinese Study Programme continues to strive to provide learning experiences that are relevant to industry needs, so that graduates are able to compete in the job market.
Henggar Prasetyowati, MTCSOL., Head of the Laboratory, stated, “We are committed to equipping students with practical skills that support them in pursuing careers, whether as professional translators, teachers, or other professions that require expertise in Mandarin Chinese.”
This translation practice is part of the D3 Mandarin Chinese Study Programme’s efforts to create graduates who are not only academically excellent, but also possess applicable competencies and are ready to face the global job market.
