On Tuesday, November 28, 2023, the Program Studi Sastra Inggris at Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (Unsoed) held an International Guest Lecture featuring speakers from UM Digos College, Philippines. The event, held via Zoom Meeting, provided an opportunity for students and faculty to gain insights and deeper knowledge in the field of Sastra Inggris.
Three main speakers who shared their experience and knowledge in this International Guest Lecture came from UM Digos College: Khareen B. Culajara, M.A., Ana Mae M. Monteza, PhD., and Princess G. Cole, MBA. Princess G. Cole presented an engaging topic regarding the importance of language and culture in establishing global relationships. In her presentation, she explained how words can serve as a bridge for understanding and appreciating cultural differences, and how the ability to communicate across cultures can strengthen global connections. This discussion not only provided practical insights but also inspired deeper understanding of the role of language and culture in a global context.
Ana Mae M. Monteza discussed a relevant topic on exploring the world through words and speaking skills. With a focus on “Understanding Intercultural Communicative Competence,” she discussed how language proficiency and speaking ability play a key role in understanding and responding effectively to cultural differences. Her presentation provided deep insights into how the use of language in an intercultural context can serve as a tool for building better understanding among individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
Through the topics presented by each speaker, this International Guest Lecture not only provided deep understanding in the field of Sastra Inggris but also stimulated critical thinking and reflection on the role of language and culture in today’s global world.
Moreover, this International Guest Lecture not only served as a means for exchanging academic knowledge but also strengthened the relationship between Unsoed and UM Digos College. Such collaboration is expected to continue developing, opening opportunities for further collaboration in research and education.
