[Purwokerto] July 6, 2022—— The D3 Mandarin Language Study Programme held its 2022 Guest Lecturer Series with the theme Challenges in the Digital Era of Translation and Tourism. The event invited two speakers from two different fields. The first speaker was a tourism practitioner, namely HR Manager of Hotel Java Heritage, Bapak Dedy Wijaya Simatupang, A.Md. The second speaker was a translation practitioner, namely Mandarin translation practitioner, Windi Baralita, B.Ed.
The event was opened by the Dean of Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Ibu Dra. Roch Widjatini, M.Si. In her remarks, she expressed warm support for this activity. She hoped that the event would enhance the knowledge and understanding of students in the fields of translation and tourism in the digital era. The event was attended by the Vice Deans I and II, as well as all lecturers and students of the D3 Mandarin Language program.
In his presentation, the first speaker, Pak Dedy, shared considerable knowledge about the tourism field. With material on hospitality, he presented numerous tourism statistics that offered great opportunities for D3 Mandarin Language students. Furthermore, investors from China have increased rapidly and continue to grow in Indonesia. “Employment prospects in the tourism field are open to students in the tourism field, such as travel agents, tourism managers, tourism consultants, tour guides, and hotel or restaurant managers,” said Dedy.
Next, the presentation from the second speaker, who has an S1 education background in Mandarin Language, revealed that translation activities are dynamic in nature, especially in written translation activities. She also shared her experience when she began as a translator in various online novel media channels. “Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; all new things that are learned must be practiced and must be tried to understand how to develop strategies to face them,” said Windi, who is also an alumna of the D3 Mandarin Language study programme.
All participants were very enthusiastic in attending the event. This was evidenced by the large number of participants who asked questions about the material presented by both speakers. Questions centered on how to become a good translator and how to develop the skills needed in the tourism field.
At the end of the event, speaker certificates were presented by the Coordinator of D3 Mandarin Language, Nunung Supriadi, B.Ed., M.Hum to both speakers. After that, all participants took a group photo.
