Purwokerto, 26 April 2025 – Reading literary works and discussing the results of reading literary works constitutes a series of academic literacy activities that should become a routine in order to improve the academic atmosphere among the academic community of Fakultas Ilmu Budaya (FIB), Universitas Jenderal Soedirman. In an effort to realize such an academic atmosphere, the Foreign Cooperation Team represented by Ririn Kurnia Trisnawati, M.A., lecturer of the S1 Sastra Inggris Study Programme who this time served as project manager, collaborated with three other universities namely University of Mindanao (UM) Digos Philippines, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (UMP) and Universitas Islam Negeri Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri Purwokerto (UIN Saizu) to hold the SELLINGUISTIKA International Book Club-Chapter 2 activity on Saturday, 26 April 2025 online via Zoom.

This activity is conducted every year by holding literary readings and discussions with diverse literary genres. In 2025, SELLINGUISTIKA entered its second edition, which raised discussion of literary stories rich in local wisdom from each country: Indonesia and the Philippines.

Sekar Hayuning Mutyas and Kautsar Ikram Esaalka, two students of Sastra Inggris Class of 2022 representing Fakultas Ilmu Budaya served as storyteller and presenter at the event. Both raised the legend of Malin Kundang, which carries universal moral values and local wisdom that are always worthy of discussion. Furthermore, the moral message contained in this legend is also highly relevant to be discussed in a cross-cultural forum. With approximately 180 student participants from the four universities, this international book club event ran smoothly and interactively. The discussion that developed demonstrated students’ enthusiasm in understanding local cultural values while enriching global perspectives. This forum generated interesting cultural discussion among participants across the Philippines and Indonesia. Not only students, but faculty members involved in this event also benefited from the discussion.
Going forward, activities to improve academic atmosphere at the international level will continue to be undertaken to increase interaction between FIB Unsoed students and international students from other countries in the Southeast Asian region. The active participation of students in forums like this is expected not only to increase literary literacy, but also to expand academic networks and strengthen global collaboration in higher education, particularly in the Southeast Asian region. With good international cooperation ties, it can help improve the quality of higher education.
