Purwokerto, 15 May 2025 — Eight students from the Sastra Inggris Study Programme at Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (FIB Unsoed) carried out a one-semester Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) internship program at Radar Banyumas, one of the leading media outlets in the Banyumas region. They are Carrissa Diva Aghista Nanda, Bunga Dwinurrahma, Rizka Noviana Eka Mulyaningsih, Ismi Asyura, Annisa Trias Werdiningrum, Violin Salsabila, Urfa Tasbita Faqih, and Sefia Milawangi.
In this activity, the students were accompanied by field supervising lecturers (DPL) Ika Maratus Sholikhah, M.A. and Agung Benta Febria Nuryanto, M.A., and were directly guided by the Editor-in-Chief of Radar Banyumas, Yudhis Fajar Kurniawan, as a professional mentor in the world of journalism. To ensure that the internship activities remained in line with the planned work program, the DPL conducted monitoring and evaluation by visiting the students directly at the internship location.

During the internship, students learned to write articles on two main themes, the first being timeless themes and the other following current trends based on Google Trends parameters. In addition, students also learned to compile and upload articles through Radar Banyumas’s Content Management System (CMS). They also worked on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)-based articles to make them more accessible to the public. Several student articles were successfully published online, including those titled:

Students also wrote features and essays, and were introduced to journalistic terminology, political dynamics, and the importance of framing news stories from various angles. For instance, in reporting on world figures, students were encouraged to explore uncommon perspectives, such as the figure’s childhood stories or humanizing details.
This experience opened the students’ eyes to how different the working world is from campus life. While students may leave class during lectures, discipline becomes essential in the workplace. “Failing to submit a single draft for a whole week will affect the assessment,” said Yudhis Fajar Kurniawan, internship mentor and Editor-in-Chief of Radar Banyumas. Most students were able to manage their time well, including attending offline meetings every two weeks while consistently completing their writing assignments.
Going forward, students are also scheduled to submit essays as individual assignments in addition to writing news articles. Their writings during the internship largely demonstrated a good level of readability, providing real contributions to Radar Banyumas as well as valuable preparation for facing the actual professional world.
