Purwokerto, 30 May 2025 – Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (FIB Unsoed) once again held a guest lecture event, this time raising the theme of utilizing the Mandarin language in the digital industry and the translation profession. The event, which took place on Friday, 30 May 2025 at 09:00 WIB, featured two inspiring speakers and was attended by students and lecturers of the D3 Bahasa Mandarin study programme.
The activity began with remarks from the Dean of Fakultas Ilmu Budaya, Prof. Dr. Ely Triasih Rahayu, S.S., M.Hum. In her remarks, she conveyed that China’s economic progress opens up great opportunities for Mandarin language graduates, especially in the field of translation. Therefore, the curriculum needs to provide wider practical space for students so they are ready to compete in the professional world.
The presentation session was guided by Dr. Dyah Tjaturrini, S.S., M.Si as the moderator, and featured two speakers from two different yet complementary fields:
Speaker 1: Taruna Widi – Content Creator Practitioner @wisatapurwokerto & @purwokertoonline
In his presentation entitled “Peluang Bahasa Mandarin Dalam Industri Digital di Bidang Pariwisata” (Mandarin Language Opportunities in the Digital Industry in the Tourism Sector), Taruna emphasized the importance of personal branding as an initial step to enter the digital tourism industry. According to him, Mandarin is now not only a secondary language in tourism content, but is starting to become a primary language on various digital platforms. He also shared strategies for creating bilingual Indonesian-Mandarin content, starting from defining goals, choosing the right platform, to the technical content production process. Furthermore, he explained how well-packaged local content can have a global impact, especially by understanding the market preferences of Chinese tourists.
Speaker 2: Dodi Nugroho – Interpreter at PT KCIC and Alumnus of D3 Bahasa Mandarin Unsoed
Delivering material about the world of translation, Dodi explained various career paths that can be pursued by Mandarin language graduates, ranging from interpreters, translators, to Mandarin speakers in various industrial sectors. He highlighted that the manufacturing industry is one of the ideal starting sectors to begin a career due to its constant and structured work system. He also invited participants to understand that the translation profession is not only about language mastery, but also about understanding the context of the work field, especially for translators working across disciplines.
The activity concluded with an interactive and enthusiastic Q&A session from the participants. In closing, both speakers were presented with certificates of appreciation from the faculty.
