Purwokerto, June 5, 2025 – In an effort to improve students’ academic literacy skills, lecturers from Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (FIB Unsoed) held a community service program at SMA Negeri 2 Purwokerto. The program, themed “Training Academic Writing Literacy Using English at SMAN 2 Purwokerto Through an Essay Writing Project,” aims to equip students with the skills to write essays logically, systematically, and academically. This activity is a form of community service and a commitment to improving the quality of education by lecturers of Fakultas Ilmu Budaya Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (FIB Unsoed).
The implementation team for this activity consisted of four lecturers: Mia Fitria Agustina, Ririn Kurnia Trisnawati, Dian Adiarti, and Eka Dyah Puspita Sari. They designed a series of training sessions covering basic writing techniques, essay structure, strategies for developing main ideas, and the use of academic language in English. The training was conducted in stages, starting from the introduction of theory to independent writing practice.
The program took place through a series of training sessions covering writing techniques, essay structure, as well as the selection and development of ideas. The students received direct guidance in composing essays that meet international academic standards. In addition, they were also given the opportunity to discuss and revise their writing based on the feedback provided.

According to Mia Fitria Agustina, as the team leader, this activity was not only aimed at improving students’ English language skills, but also at fostering a critical and logical mindset that is crucial in the academic world. “Writing an essay is not just about arranging sentences, but also about structuring arguments, processing data, and presenting ideas systematically. This is an important asset for students to face future academic challenges,” explained the main driver of this activity.

The students’ enthusiasm was clearly visible in each training session, where they actively participated and showed progress in their writing abilities. With this essay writing project, it is hoped that students will become more confident in using English for academic communication and be able to apply it in their future studies.
This community service activity is concrete proof of the commitment to improving the quality of education and supporting the development of students’ academic literacy in Purwokerto. With this inspiring program, it is hoped that more educational institutions will pay greater attention to developing academic writing skills for the younger generation.
