Purwokerto – To enhance the quality of education and strengthen a curriculum relevant to industry needs, the Fakultas Ilmu Budaya at Universitas Jenderal Soedirman held an event titled “Workshop on Diploma Programme Development Towards Vocational Education and Advanced Technical Guidance on Undergraduate Programme Curriculum Development”. The event took place over two days, on Thursday and Friday, December 12-13, 2024.
The S1 Sastra Inggris programme participated in the Advanced Technical Guidance on Undergraduate Programme Curriculum Development, which featured speaker Dr. Laeli Etika Rahmawati, S.Pd., M.Pd., Head of the Curriculum Development and Learning Innovation Division at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. The main objective of this activity was to provide insights and strategies for curriculum development in accordance with academic vision and the needs of the working world.
Dr. Laeli emphasized in her presentation the importance of aligning higher education curricula with contemporary demands. “A well-designed curriculum must go through processes of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation,” she stated.
One highlight of the event was the appreciation given to the S1 Sastra Inggris Programme. During the technical guidance session, this programme was recognized for successfully developing a comprehensive curriculum in the field of language and literature that aligns with the creative industry needs. Dr. Laeli directly commended the programme, citing it as an example to be emulated by other study programmes.
S1 Sastra Inggris demonstrated maturity in curriculum development. The curriculum constructed is able to integrate science-based competencies with practical skills, such as creative writing and professional communication. The developed curriculum is not only academically relevant but also highly applicable in the working world.
According to Dyah Raina Purwaningsih, S.S., M.Hum., Coordinator of the S1 Sastra Inggris Programme, this success is inseparable from the hard work of the entire teaching team. “They have the awareness to advance together, recognize the importance of curriculum in the learning process, and have begun to develop a quality culture. All faculty members in the programme are willing to learn to understand how to develop a quality curriculum.”
“Moreover, the maturity of the Programme’s curriculum is also due to the roles of curriculum experts, students, and all stakeholders,” she added. Input provided by these parties was absorbed and applied by faculty members in the Sastra Inggris Programme, resulting in a curriculum that meets the needs of industry and the working world.
This event is expected to serve as a starting point for better curriculum development across all study programmes within FIB Unsoed. Participants demonstrated high enthusiasm throughout the event. The material presented was highly practical and easy to understand. Furthermore, the interactive discussion atmosphere also added value. Participants were given the opportunity to ask questions and discuss directly with the speaker, allowing various challenges faced in curriculum development to be addressed together.
This Workshop and Technical Guidance on Curriculum Development affirms FIB Unsoed’s commitment to continue innovating in producing graduates who are qualified and job-ready. With the conclusion of this event, it is hoped that each study programme can take concrete steps in implementing a relevant curriculum, so that graduates are able to compete at both national and international levels.
