On Thursday, 27 February 2025, a curriculum review for the Pendidikan Bahasa Jepang (PBJ) study programme was held, inviting an expert from The Japan Foundation (JF), Kadoi Minako, M.A. This curriculum review activity marked the first visit from the JF regional office of Central Java-DIY, while also reviewing the progress of the PBJ study programme as a Japanese language education programme that was only established at the end of 2023.

The curriculum review activity opened with a presentation on the current condition of the PBJ study programme, as well as a presentation on the curriculum currently running in the PBJ study programme by the programme coordinator, Dr. Haryono, S.S., M.Pd. This was followed by a question-and-answer session and review from Kadoi sensei as the expert from JF. Kadoi sensei stated that, “As a new study programme, the PBJ study programme has a good and systematic curriculum structure to support the achievement of graduate profiles in the field of edupreneurship. The structure currently in place consists of courses that support the development of Japanese language skills, supported also by supporting courses that reinforce the achievement of graduate profiles”. Responding to this, Dian Bayu Firmansyah, S.Pd., M.Pd., as the head of PBJ curriculum development, stated that, “The PBJ curriculum structure is designed to support the achievement of graduate profiles in the field of edupreneurship, so it is arranged in such a way that students can be well facilitated, including facilities for completing final assignments through a non-thesis pathway, such as creating learning applications, Japanese language learning content, and others”.

On this occasion, Kadoi sensei also introduced various teaching materials that can support the learning process in the PBJ study programme, namely teaching materials based on the JF standard (Can do). This curriculum review activity was thus also used as an initial step for the synergy of the PBJ study programme curriculum towards a curriculum based on that JF standard. “JF has developed a great many teaching materials for upper secondary level, both in SMA and SMK, through Nihongo Kirakira and Nihongo Rakuraku, which greatly ease teaching for teachers because all audio-visual materials can be easily obtained through the available website, including PPT slide materials for teaching. So teachers can focus on the implementation/application of students’ Japanese language ability”, said Kadoi sensei. Furthermore, Kadoi sensei added, “For learning at the higher education level, JF provides the teaching materials Marugoto and Irodori, which greatly support the achievement of Japanese language competence through the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), as well as everyday Japanese communication competence in Japan”.
This very valuable input from Kadoi sensei serves as a consideration for the PBJ study programme in determining policy direction for the use of teaching materials to pursue the JF standard (Can do), and to become a Japanese language education programme that can properly apply the JF standard. This is considered important because it is hoped that the PBJ study programme will become the spearhead to support the development of Japanese language learning at the upper secondary level in the Barlingmascakeb area, in collaboration with MGMP Barlingmascakeb.

The curriculum review activity, held in a warm and lighthearted yet still serious atmosphere, ended with a visit to see the learning facilities and infrastructure at FIB Unsoed, such as laboratories, the pendopo, the hall, and others. Hopefully many benefits can be gained from this visit and curriculum review activity from The Japan Foundation for the future development of the PBJ study programme.
